Linear Algebra 60 Hour Summer Course

Dates: June 12 – 30, 2023

Time: 8am – 12:30pm

Prerequisites: AP Calculus BC or Multivariable Calculus

SJP students need a recommendation from their current math teacher.

Course Description:

Linear Algebra is the foundation of machine learning, from the notations used to describe algorithms, to the implementation of the algorithms itself.  Linear Algebra is a branch of mathematics that deals with linear equations and linear functions which are represented through matrices and vectors.  A strong understanding of linear algebra helps students to understand geometric concepts such as planes, in higher dimensions, and perform mathematical operations on them.

This course would seek to provide a strong foundation of linear algebra progressing through units such as:

• Solving systems of equations using matrices, particularly through Gaussian elimination
• Vector spaces
• Properties of matrices
• Linear maps using matrices
• Eigenvalues and diagonalizability

This course is an intensive 60 hours of instruction and demands the full dedication and commitment of the student. Substantial work must be completed outside of class time in order to master the necessary topics.  Students will receive a grade, however, no credits will be assigned.  For students who do not attend St. John’s, a letter will be mailed to their school showing the attendance record and final exam grade

Successful completion of this course will prepare students for the study of higher mathematics, including courses in vector calculus, abstract algebra, and differential equations.

Class meets on the following dates: 

Week 1: Monday June 12 – Friday June 16, 2023 (8am-12:30pm)

Week 2: Tuesday June 20-Friday June 23, 2023 (8am-12:30pm)

Week 3: Monday June 26-Thursday June 29, 2023 (8am-12:30pm)

Final Exam: Friday June 30, 2023 (8am-10am)
